Legion starts tourney with loss to Madison
Jack Massee's walk-off, three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Madison to a 11-9 win over the Morris American Legion in Northwest Section playoff action Thursday night in Madison.
After giving up seven runs in the second inning, Morris starter Nathan Gades retired the next 13 batters in a row heading into the seventh inning. After a walk and an error, Gades struck out Baxter Dufrane for the first out in the inning. Tronn Tosel drove in Ryan Hoium with a single to make it 9-8 before Massee's line drive over the left field wall.
Morris out hit Madison 12-6 and scored a run in every inning except the sixth.
Dustin Sauter led the offense with five hits, including two doubles and a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Gades had two hits, a run-scoring double in the first, and a solo home run to lead off the third. Five other Post 29 players had at least one hit.
Gades pitched six-and-a-third innings. He allowed six hits, five earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Massee led Madison's offense with two hits and five runs driven in.
Madison will now play Wheaton in the winner's bracket game Saturday at 3 p.m. at Chizek Field. The Bandits defeated Chokio 5-1 on Thursday.
Morris and Chokio will play for the third time this year at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, also in Morris. The two teams split during the regular season. Both games were won by one run.
