Prep Softball: Tigers down BOLD to win third-straight West Central Conference title

MORRIS — The Morris/Chokio-Alberta softball team defeated BOLD in the first game of a West Central Conference doubleheader on Thursday to claim its third-straight conference championship.

The Tigers defeated the Warriors 14-4 in Game One to wrap up the title for the fourth time in five years.

BOLD downed Morris/CA 6-5 in Game Two.

In Game One, Piper Gibson hit a three-run home run in the Tigers’ eight-run fourth inning, and they wrapped up the game with a four-run fifth inning.

Brooke Gillespie was 2-for-3 with two doubles, and she worked all five innings to earn the win.

Becca Holland also had two hits.

BOLD’s Taylor Sagedahl, Elsa Skeie and Peyton Weis all had two hits.

In Game Two, MCA took a one-run lead in the sixth inning, but in the bottom of the seventh, BOLD scored the winning run on a base hit and two Tigers errors.

Morris/CA is 15-4 overall and has a bye as the No. 1 seed in Section 3AA-North. The Tigers play the winner of the New London-Spicer-Minneota first-round game on Tuesday in Morris.

Mayer Lutheran’s Martina Saulsbury pitched a solid game, allowing just three hits in a victory in the opening game of the Section 4A playoffs on Thursday in Grove City.

The Falcons’ scored their lone run in the sixth inning when Shelbie Jackson doubled and scored on Madison Denton’s single.

Twelve Montevideo players had at least one hit and the Thunder Hawks pounded winless Yellow Medicine East.

Ashley McKee drove in three runs and Nicole Feldhake scored three times for Montevideo.

Marley Lara, Haley Halvorson and Hannah Gullickson all scored runs for the Sting, who didn’t have a hit.

Minnewaska 14, BBE 4

Minnewaska fell behind early but the Lakers righted their ship with an eight-run third in a non-conference win over the Jaguars on Thursday at Minnewaska High School.

The Lakers’ Abby VerSteeg and Bailey Stewart both had two hits and drove in three runs, and Erin Edmunds hit a solo home run. Mason Schlief had two doubles in four trips.

BBE’s Jordyn Steffenson hit a two-run home run and Karlee Kern had two doubles and drove in two runs.

The Lakers open the section playoffs against Benson/Hancock at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Montevideo.
