Eagles win home opener

Sam Mattson throws a pitch in the 5-4 win over the Clinton Cards last Friday, May 23 in Morris. Mattson got the win in the game, striking out eight batters.

The Morris Eagles debuted at Chizek Field in Morris on Friday, May 23. The Eagles took on the Clinton Cards and won 5-4.

A strong pitching performance and some two out hitting gave the Eagles a win on Friday night in Morris. Sam Mattson threw eight strong innings, scattering eight hits and striking out eight. Jake Torgerson slammed the door in the ninth, getting the save for the Eagles. Mattson was matched up against Land O Ducks division legend Mike Adelman in a pitchers duel.

The Eagles banged out 12 hits against Adelman with Mitch Carbert and Torgerson leading the team with three hits each. Nate Gades finished with two hits and a RBI for the Eagles in the 5-4 victory.

All the scoring happened before the fourth inning and settled in a pitchers duel after that.

The Eagles got on the board in the first in the bottom of the second when Carbert hit a two-out single to bring in Tanner Picht who reached on a hit by pitch call to leadoff the inning.

Then in the third, Clinton tied it up, but Morris got the bats going in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs. Torgerson led off with a single to start things for the Eagles then Cole Riley reached on a bunt. Marquart laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Torgerson and Riley, and Ryan Beyer came up to the plate and knocked in one on a double dropped by the right fielder. Mac Beyer hit a two RBI double, scoring Riley and Ryan Beyer, before running across the plate himself on a Nate Gades single to put the Eagles up 5-1.

Clinton posted three in the top of the fourth in the comeback attempt, but got no close as the Morris Eagles edged out the 5-4 win.

The next game for the Eagles is in Morris against the Appleton A’s on Friday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m. Also, the Eagles host the Minneota Mudhens in a Sunday afternoon game in Morris at 2 p.m. before going on the road to Chokio the following Friday, June 6.
