Hanson hits for cycle in split

North Central softball (3-10, 1-7 UMAC) opened up its new field on Friday with an 8-5 win over the University of Minnesota, Morris (9-13, 4-4 UMAC), but the Cougars responded by winning the second game 21-1. Sam Hanson hit for the cycle and Minnesota Morris combined for 20 hits in the game two win.

The first game of the doubleheader started off well for the Cougars as they posted a three spot in the top of the first inning. Kristy Hoge led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Jordan Iverson drew a walk and then Hanson singled to left, allowing Hoge to cross the plate. Molly Olson singled to load the bases and then with two outs Mandy Allman singled to give UMM a 3-0 lead as Hanson and Olson reached home.

North Central put together a rally in the bottom of the second, pulling to within one at 3-2. The Rams took the lead in the fourth inning, putting up three runs on one hit and one error. Hoge scored her second run of the game in the top of fifth, bringing Morris back to within one at 5-4.

The Rams responded with another three run inning, trying to put the game on ice and taking an 8-4 lead. The Cougars only managed a run in the top of the seventh as they dropped the game 8-5.

Minnesota Morris returned to form in the second game, blowing the Rams out for the second time this season. The game was never close as the Cougars scored 11 runs in the first and eight runs in the second, taking a 19-0 lead after two innings of play.

The Cougars added a run in the fourth and fifth to make it 21-0. North Central picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the final score 21-1.

Hanson was 4-5 with five RBI and three runs in the second game. Gina Downie went 4-4 with four runs and two RBI. Mackenzie Weatherly and Meagan Anderson combined to scatter three hits over five innings on the mound with Weatherly picking up the win.
