Final home weekend for Cougars

UMM Sports Information

The final regular season home games will be played this Friday and Saturday in the P.E. Center for both men's and women's basketball. North Central and Northwestern will be the opponents for the Cougars, as both the men and women look to keep pace in the congested Upper Midwest Athletic Conference race.

The women sit in a tie with St. Scholastica at 7-1 in the conference. Nipping at their heels is 6-2 Northwestern (14-5, 6-2 UMAC), who handed the Cougars (10-9, 7-1 UMAC) their lone loss this season, and as well as 6-2 Martin Luther. Before Minnesota Morris can worry about the Eagles, they will need to deal with North Central (3-15, 1-7 UMAC), who comes to town on Friday.

Earlier this season Minnesota Morris beat the North Central Rams 80-51 in Minneapolis thanks to 20 points from Emily Auch and 14 points off the bench from Tori Holt. The team overcame a 4-21 three point shooting night by forcing 22 turnovers, which turned into 31 points.

Northwestern was able to get to the foul line 32 times against the Cougars making 26 of them in their seven point win over Minnesota Morris. Kendra Wycoff had 23 points and seven made three pointers but it was not enough to pick up the road win.

The men will also look to avenge a loss to the Northwestern Eagles (9-10, 6-2 UMAC) this weekend. Currently, Morris (12-7, 6-2 UMAC), Northwestern and Crown are tied for first place in the UMAC with a 6-2 record. Just like the women, the men will take on North Central (8-9, 2-6 UMAC) on Friday night.

In the first matchup with the Rams, the Cougars hit 25 free throws and shot 8-18 from three in their seven point win. Minnesota Morris held a 16 point advantage in made free throws in the game, which proved to be the difference.

The Cougars completed an eight point second half comeback against Northwestern and held on for a 59-56 win. RJ Dean and Brendon Foss had 12 points in the win over the Eagles.

Saturday, Feb. 8 will be senior night for Foss, Evan Reller and Tyler Pendleton.
