Field trials bring lots of retrievers (and their people) to Morris area
The second of two field trials hosted by the West Central Minnesota Retriever Club this summer was held July 19-21 in the Morris area.
Three of the 215 dogs entered to compete belong to Bobby Smith of Madison, Miss. His dogs are all Labradors: five-year-old Jake, three-year-old Shade, and 19 month-old Joy.
Smith is a regular participant in the WCMRC’s July Field Trial. It’s one of five that he attends “up north” every year.
He’s been staying in Morris since competing in the National Amateur Retriever Field Trials in Mondovi, Wisc. in June.
In between field trials, Smith works with his friend, and WCMRC president, Dan Sayles.
“I love to work with Dan, the great grounds, great weather, and all the stuff we come to Minnesota for.
“It’s the only place that has nice enough weather,” Smith explained. “It’s so hot at home, you can’t do anything.”
Smith will return home in August, when the weather starts to cool off in Mississippi.
He and his retrievers take in 20-25 field trials every year, traveling all over the southeast during the winter months.
