Talking It Over: Reasons to keep your resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are being made and broken quite regularly at this time of year. Those who make a resolution have good intentions at the time, but sometimes lack the resolve to stick to them. Maybe, when we make a resolution, we need to look deep and find out why we really want to keep that resolution.

There could be a lot of reasons to make a resolution. We may want to improve our health and hope of living longer. We could have a desire to change our lifestyle and the course life has taken us. There may be a need to learn more, see the world or simply spend more time with the people we care about. It depends on the type of resolution you make, but each time one is made, there is usually a good reason for it.

So how can we be sure that we keep those important resolutions? What will make us stay true to the course and follow through on our desires? The answer is within each of us. It involves committment and hard work. The desire might be there, and the knowledge about what needs to be done, but if you don’t follow through, the result will be a resolve that is broken.

Another reason that so many resolutions are broken is that the goal is set too high. If you want to improve your finances, don’t opt for a gain of a million dollars. Instead set your sights more realisticly perhaps by cutting out some luxuries in order to keep more in the pocket book.

You also need to take into consideration what is physically and mentally possible. If you have physical restrictions, don’t set out to overdo it on exercise. You also don’t want to over stress your life by taking on too many classes, jobs, volunteer or committee work. Make sure you leave enough time in your life for relaxation and simply enjoying the things around you.

Those two things alone should be part of all of our resolutions. Life is simply too short to over plan and over indulge. While we each strive to keep our resolutions, make sure to set them at an attainable level while still being able to enjoy life. That will help you stick to the resolution and eventually meet the goal.
