Letter to the editor: Be a true American
To the editor:
Many people today, especially liberals, call America a racist country. They say that Americans hate Mexicans and Arabs. This is an unfair critique. The Irish, who are white, started coming to America in the nineteenth century, and we Americans hated them. In the early twentieth century, the Poles, who are also white, started to swarm to the United States, and we hated them as well. It is not about race. It is about being American. To be American is to hate all immigrants, whatever their race or ethnicity. But, to our credit, we will eventually accept and even love those same people that we now hate.
However, I must confess that I am puzzled about our contemporary situation. There are the Russians. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to love them or hate them. I know that President Trump loves them, so I guess I'm supposed to love them too. After all, one of his staff members worked for Russian Television during Trump's presidential campaign, Putin strategically disseminated information in order to get Trump elected, and Trump has agreed to ease sanctions on Russia so that it could have the freedom to invade other countries. Clearly, our President wants us to love the Russians. But most of the Russians here today are immigrants, and, as an American, I believe that it is my patriotic duty to hate immigrants. If Trump would have me love Russian immigrants, then I'm not even sure what it means to be an American anymore.
Put simply, I'm not comfortable with uncertainty, which brings me to my last question. I love America, and I want to be the best American I can possibly be. To prepare myself to be truly American, I would like to know who we are supposed to hate after we finally accept and start loving Mexicans and Arabs. Can somebody tell me who we Americans plan to hate next so I can prepare myself?
