Talking it Over: It's a good time to get involved

This is the time of year when a lot of teams and groups are reorganizing for a new year. You can find notices and signs everywhere inviting people to join a group or team or even to volunteer time to help others. That means that it is a good time get up out of your recliner and get involved.

As the weather gets colder and there are more and more threats of rain, wind and even snow, many of us like to hibernate indoors where it is warm and cozy. However, that is not always a good thing. Getting out of the house, even in winter, is a good way to stay healthy both physically and mentally. Being involved with a group keeps our minds active and our lives busy so there is less time to worry about little things.

There are also many opportunities at this time of year to join a team. It might be a bowling team, dart league, basketball or volleyball team or even a card group. Any one of these will get us moving physically and also emotionally. An active mind and body is usually considered more healthy.

Volunteering can also be a great way to get us out of the house and useful to others. Hospitals and nursing homes, schools and churches are always happy to have volunteers. You can also spend some time visiting shut-ins or offering to give someone a ride to an appointment, church or shopping. This type of work can be rewarding in so many ways.

Groups like 4-H, Homemakers, scouts and many more are re-organizing at this time of year and always looking for new members. You can offer up your time and talent by sharing with others through some of these wonderful organizations.

As the weather gets colder and winter starts to appear on the horizon, don’t just shut yourself indoors. Get out and get active. Keep your mind and body healthy, not just through physical work, but through interaction with others. The benefits are very rewarding and the long winter months are sure to pass much more quickly.
