Growing Green: Welcome to Summer!

The glorious days of early summer have FINALLY arrived, and people are busy as beavers trying to get their lawn and garden work accomplished. Sore backs and achy muscles at the end of a long gardening day are the early cost of the later fruits of the garden, and avid gardeners willingly pay this each year. If your garden is planted, and you’re ready to sit back and relax, here are a few events and activities to fill those occasional spare moments in the summer growing season.

On June 18, the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners of Douglas County are sponsoring their annual Garden Bus Tour. This year’s tour will stop at four locations in and around West Central Minnesota.  Bluebird Gardens in Fergus Falls is the first stop.  Join owner, Mark Boen, for a tour of this 205 acre CSA that produces sustainably grown vegetables ( Dallas Flynn, of Forest Glen Farm in Frazee will be your guide at this Certified Naturally Grown farm. Highlights include shitake mushrooms, garlic, grapes, Highland cattle and more ( The lunch stop will be at the Cactus Restaurant in Perham, MN, followed by a shopping trip to Jean’s the Right Plant Place.  Jean’s specializes in perennials for northern gardens.  Check out their 150 varieties of daylilies, 300 varieties of Hostas plus 170 varieties of other perennials ( The final stop will be at Grass Roots of Ottertail. Owner, Tom Meinhover, has been producing flowers and plants for over 35 years! He has a large assortment of fruit trees and annual and perennial flowers for your garden ( Cost of this tour is $30, which does not include the cost for lunch. Registrations will be accepted until seats are full.  For more information, contact us at 320-762-3890.
