Stevens Co. Board of Commissioners Preview: Road services and ditch discussions

STEVENS COUNTY - Although the Stevens County Board of Commissioners agenda appears short, County Coordinator Brian Giese said he expects some "lengthy conversations" about Highway Department services and county ditch issues at their meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

As County Engineer, Giese will present the board with two service agreements with the City of Donnelly and Framnes Township.

The first agreement with Donnelly is to either trade equipment for services or pay for snow removal services on MCSAH 35.

The second agreement is to provide snow removal and blading services for Framnes Township. Kathy Dingman, representing the Franmes Township Board, approached the commissioners at their last meeting to ask for services, but the board declined to make a decision until they could consult more fully with Giese.

According to his report to the board, Giese believes that the department will need to hire seasonal part-time maintenance staff to keep up with snow removal efforts this winter.

Giese estimates that providing these services to Framnes Township will generate $22,000 in additional revenue for the Highway Department, but that $13,000 of equipment-related expenses will be incurred.

The other major discussion item on the agenda is a look at the county ditch system with Ditch Attorney Kurt Deter. Deter should address the concept of recording county ditches, determining splits of ditch benefits, county drainage policies and other ditch issues.

First, Stevens County Human Services Director Joanie Murphy will present the board with a contract with Traverse County Family Services for long-term care financial work.
