St. Mary's Samplings 4/13/13

Kindergarten:  We worked with the letter w this week—we learned about whales.  This was Calvin Braegelmann’s Wonderful Week. We got to play soccer, do some painting and meet the volleyball team (his dad Chad is the coach).  The UMM play was enjoyed by all.

Grade 1:  This week in math we started double-digit addition and are off to a great start with it.  In reading, we worked with words with –ou and –ow.  We worked on the importance of retelling stories and events in the correct order that they happen.  We also worked with adjectives, specifically color and number words.  In science we are learning about weather, the water cycle and clouds—cumulus, cirrus, and cumulonimbus clouds.  We enjoyed the UMM children’s play on Friday.

Grade 2: The second graders have been studying weather in science class.  We have been learning about the water cycle and safety tips during storms.  We also learned about Doppler radar and that it is used for weather forecasting.  In math class we have been working with shapes and creating patterns. We have enjoyed making repeating patterns.

Grade 3:  The third graders worked on identifying the names of household objects in Spanish with Guadalupe this week.  In math they continued to work with fractions and observed patterns of related fractions and decimals.  They also worked with improper fractions and mixed numbers.  They realized how important it is to know your multiplication and division facts as this work gets harder. The class enjoyed the UMM children’s play on Friday afternoon.

Grade 4: The fourth graders have been busy working on long division. It is hard to remember so many steps, but we are getting the hang of it. We also are working on themes and morals of stories in reading class. In social studies we are studying the midwest. It is fun for us to learn about where we live.

Grade 5: The fifth graders are learning how to divide decimals with decimals. We have been looking at different numeral shift patterns to help us with this. In reading class we are learning about how authors can write things for different purposes. We learned about persuasive writing this week.

Grade 6: The sixth graders finished their chapter on geometric relationships in math and took a test on Tuesday. Wednesday in math we started a new chapter on measurement and geometry. The sixth graders have been busy working on memorizing their speech books for the upcoming contest on May 4, which will be held at our school this year. On Friday our school attended the UMM play and we all enjoyed the performance.
