Ritchie to address voting during Morris stop

Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie will visit Morris on Monday, April 26, to address the importance of voter participation and explain legislative changes that affect the election process.

Ritchie will speak at the University of Minnesota, Morris' Welcome Center at 5:15 p.m., then will attend the monthly Community Meal at the Morris Senior Center.

The meal is served from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The public is invited to both events.

Ritchie's office staff will be on hand to assist students interested in registering to vote and to answer questions about voting.

Morris students vote in high numbers. In 2009, 92 percent of UMM's graduating class had voted in federal and state elections. However, as a group, eligible voters ages 18-24 tend to vote less than any other voting age group. If voters age 30 and younger voted in equal percentage to older age groups in the 2008 election, an additional seven million votes would have been cast nationwide.

"It is so important that we engage students and provide information about their voting rights so that they feel welcomed into the process," Ritchie said.
