Noted higher education scholar at UMM Sept. 18

Laura I. Rendón will speak at the University of Minnesota, Morris on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. in the Humanities Fine Arts Recital Hall.

Rendon's address, "Toward a Pedagogy of Wholeness, Social Justice and Liberation," is free and open to the public. A discussion follows.

Rendón is professor and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University. Her research focuses on access, retention and graduation of low-income, first-generation college students and the transformation of teaching and learning to emphasize wholeness and social justice.

s assistant to the chancellor for equity and diversity and director of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Intercultural Programs. "Her presentation will provide additional ideas to our continuing conversation about intercultural competence and social justice."

The recipient of the 2006 Association for the Study of Higher Education Distinguished Service Award, Rendón is the author of Sentipensante (Sensing/thinking) Pedagogy: Educating for Wholeness, Social Justice and Liberation. She serves as chair of the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships Board of Directors. She also serves on the Naropa University Board of Trustees and is an ASHE past president.
