Morris Area Community Education 032214

By Tony Reimers, Community Education Director

There is an estimated $200 billion in annual travel generated spending in the United States, according to the US Travel Association. An estimated 75.3 million people traveled 100-plus miles to attend sports events in the last five years. If you live or work near the Morris area, these are exciting numbers.

In January, Morris Area Community Education and the girls’ basketball program hosted a fantastic tournament in the Morris Area High School gyms. Our wrestling program hosted a terrific elementary wrestling meet on Friday, Jan. 31. On March 1, Morris Area Community Education and the boys’ basketball program hosted 40 teams during a one day tournament.  The Lee Community Center hosted a hockey tournament on that same day. Coach Trent Oberg and the gymnastics team also hosted the West Central Conference meet in the Morris Area Elementary Gym. And, these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Morris Area hosting tournaments.

While these events take extra energy and time to host, they are great opportunities for our youth and our community. These tournaments create recreation opportunities to keep our youth healthy. They create leadership opportunities for our youth. They provide an avenue for players and parents to work together to create a tournament or event we are all proud of.  These tournaments likewise provide local business with additional customers.

In mid-April, you will be receiving the Summer 2014 Tiger Tracks with all our summer recreation opportunities available for your children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Encourage them to join a team! I also encourage you to support these teams and the tournaments they host.

A sample of the Summer 2014 recreation opportunities include: Pee Wees – Bantam Division, Pee Wees – Mites Division, Pee Wees – Tuffies Division, Elementary Softball League, 14U Softball League, 18U Softball League, Gymnastics Camps, Golf League and Lessons, Hershey Track and Field, Pitcher/Catcher Camps, Camp Alpha, PreK T-ball, PreK Tumbling, Flag Football, Tackle Football, and Tennis Lessons.
