St. Mary's Samplings 012514

A review of happenings and upcoming events at St. Mary’s School in Morris

Kindergarten: We had Monday off in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.  What a great man.  We did a lot of reading and activities about MLK.  We had a review week of the letters O and F and we are learning simple addition and subtraction—we think it is simple too because we are so smart.  We are anxious for next week for it will be Catholic Schools Week.

Grade 1:  We are ready for a winter warm up…this bitter cold has us a little stir crazy. We are working on words with the long /o/, long /u/ and long /e/ this week.  We learned a little about Dr. Martin Luther King and the wonderful work he did.  In math we worked with numbers all the way up to 100.  We are getting excited for Catholic Schools Week next week.

Grade 2:  The second graders have been working with graphs and tables in math class.  They are learning to make comparisons with the information.  They are also learning to convert the information on a table to a picture graph.  We are reading a chapter book about snowboarding in reading class.  It is fun to read the same book and to discuss it as we go.  In social studies, we are learning to read a product map and to create one of our own.

Grade 3: Despite the short school week we kept busy getting as much class work done as we could.  We continued to work on our multiplication and division facts in math. We enjoyed the Twins Caravan on Wednesday morning.  We took our third nine weeks AR Star Reading test to set our goal for the third nine weeks.  We are excited about all the fun activities that are planned for Catholic Schools Week. You are all invited to the kick-off Mass and pancake breakfast at Assumption Church on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 10:30 a.m.

Grade 4: This has been a bit of a challenging week for us to get a whole lot accomplished! Between snow days and kids being on vacation we have not had a lot of quality time. However, we did manage to get in a spelling lesson on contractions. We also have been learning about the states and capitals in the northeast part of the United States. We are very excited that we are going to celebrate Catholic Schools Week next week. We have a lot of fun activities planned and will kick things off with our 10:30 mass on Sunday.

Grade 5 & 6: We all returned safely from our Wolf Ridge trip and we are back working hard (when we are not having a snow day). In science we are preparing for a test on our chapter about “Parents and Offspring.” In spelling the 6th graders are working on their lesson of irregular plurals and the fifth graders are working on compound words this week. We are eager for Catholic Schools Week next week and are looking forward to the many fun events planned.

Principal’s Notes: Despite the cold weather we have lots to look forward to.  Catholic Schools Week is next week beginning with our Kick Off Mass on Sunday.  We have our students participating in the Mass as readers, greeter, gift bearers, and the St. Mary’s choir.  We have so many fun things planned for the students and parents.  Then, right around the corner, we have the Dinner Auction on Feb. 15.

Even if you’re not Catholic or have your children in St. Mary’s, purchase a dinner ticket and join us.

The auction items are many and awesome and the dinner too.   It’s a spectacular evening.
