St. Mary's Samplings 113013

A review of happenings and upcoming events at St. Mary’s School in Morris

Kindergarten:  This was a review week of “i” and “t”, we also reviewed all our words thus far.  We had birthday treats in honor of Max Rohloff; he turned 6 on Nov., 26.  We are excited for our days off and time to spend with our families.  Hope each and every one of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Grade 1:  This week we finished Unit 3 in math working with math story problems with unknown numbers and took our test. We learned more still about the pilgrims and Wampanoag people and the first Thanksgiving.  We learned how hard they worked for their food.  We made homemade bread and butter.  The butter was a lot of work but it sure was tasty.  We talked a lot about remembering to be thankful for what we have.  First grade wishes all of you a very happy Thanksgiving.

Grade 2:  The second graders have been learning about the first Thanksgiving.  We have been reading books that help us to understand life at that time.  In math, we have been estimating numbers and classifying numbers as even or odd.  We also began learning nontraditional ways of adding two two-digit numbers.  We are all looking forward to spending time with our families over our Thanksgiving holiday.

Grade 3: This week we completed our work with symmetry, congruence, and angles with Ms. Thurk.  We were invited to attend the Minnesota Zoo program in Chokio that was sponsored by the Chokio Community Club.  We thank them and Michael Eble and Michelle Lopez for driving us to the program. We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and families.

Grade 4: In reading class we read a tall tale about Pecos Bill that was full of hyperbole. We then created our very own tall tales and they were full of hyperbole and adventure. In math class we started to talk about writing addition and subtraction change problems. In social studies we finished a unit talking about our government and how it is set up and works.  We would like to wish you all a blessed Thanksgiving.

Grade 5 and 6: This week in math the sixthgraders have been learning about mixed numbers and improper fractions and comparing and ordering fractions from least to greatest. The fifth graders continued to work with estimating and rounding numbers and they also worked a lot with discrete and continuous data and how to graph the data. In religion we colored an “I am thankful to the Lord!” page and talked about many things we are very thankful for during this holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Principal’s Notes

On Monday we have St. Mary’s School Preschool Night from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the gym.  We will have a special visitor and it will be fun. St. Mary’s students will also have a visitor on Friday and that will be fun.  Can anyone guess who our visitor will be?

Sunday, Dec. 8, St. Mary’s parents and students will be hosting the pancake breakfast after Mass in the cafeteria.  It really is very good so join us if you please.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
