Area Student Accomplishments 112313

Derrick Foss of Hancock graduated from the University of Minnesota, Morris on July 26, 2013. Foss earned a degree in management, human resources.

Gage Backman, son of Brad and Jonna Backman of Donnelly, Minn., has been selected to receive a Mentor Scholarship and College Now Scholarship for the 2014-2015 academic year from Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. Recipients of this scholarship are recognized for their academic accomplishments and outstanding leadership abilities. His planned major field of study is psychology.


James Newhouse of Hancock is one of 12 Dordt College students of the college's Prairie Grass Productions company who assisted with the creation of the video called Cornerstone Prison Church: A Christian Reformed Church Inside the SD State Pen. The group produced a video told from the perspective of the inmates who are part of Cornerstone Prison Ministries. Newhouse is a sophomore majoring in digital media production.

The team was only allowed eight hours to shoot within the prison. Students worked with the video's director and Dordt College Professor Mark Volkers, assisting with everything from lighting, framing shots, setting up audio, and more.
