Bookends 6-8-13

It looks and feels like spring is really here to stay now, with summer just around the corner.

The library has a fresh look with new tile in the staff area and new carpeting in the meeting room. Funds for these upgrades came from the library’s capital budget, which is included in the City budget. The current library building was built in 1969, and renovated in 1999. It’s always good to keep up with the maintenance.

Summer Reading Program begins June 10 with the arrival of the Minnesota Zoomobile at 11 a.m. The Summer Reading Program theme this year is, “Dig into Reading,” so hopefully we will see a variety of burrowing animals. On Thursday, June 27 we will host the award winning Okee Dokee Brothers at 2 p.m. This program is sponsored by the Viking Library System, with funds from the Minnesota Legacy Grant. Also sponsored with Legacy money, will be a Minnesota Comic Workshop from the Minnesota History Museum on Wednesday, July 17 from 2 – 4 p.m. Our final program will be a repeat performance by magician, STAR Michaelina on Thursday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Story time continues on Thursday mornings and Lunch Bunch for younger children (K – 3rd grade) will be Wednesdays in June and July 3. A second Book Bunch for older children is planned on Mondays, June 24, July 1, 8 and 15 at noon. Friday Flicks this year is sponsored by Allan Saugstad of Thrivent Financial and there will be three movies: June 21, June 28, and July 26.

New this year is a card game tournament on Tuesday, July 2 from 5:30 – 8 p.m. This event is being sponsored by John’s Total Entertainment. The new game, Kaijudo will be introduced and other favorite games are Magic and Pokemon. Bring your own cards, or just come and join in the fun. Our Mad Scientists Club will have a new twist with visits to the Children’s WCROC Garden, Mohr Plumbing and the Morris Water Treatment plant. Finally, the UMM geology department will give a ‘rock’ tour of Morris. All of this is to celebrate the love of reading by digging in!

Our display case this month features Norwegian trolls and nisse from Minette Stalheim Johnson and her family. If you have a collection you would like to share, contact the library to schedule a month to display it – 320-589-1634.

Looking ahead, the library will be closed Thursday, July 4 for Independence Day.
