Celebrate Cyrus: Alumni, friends invited for all-school reunion in June

MORRIS – Approximately one month from now, alumni, family and supporters of the Cyrus School District will be coming home for the final all-school reunion before the district consolidates with the Morris Area School District in July.

“It's a time to invite friends, family and alumni back home,” said Barb Hesse, one of the reunion organizers. “The school can't close without a celebration.”

Hesse and fellow organizers Sheryle Dahl and Connie Solvie began meeting in October to start planning. They have relied on other alumni and volunteers to help put together the event, scheduled from Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9.

“You don't have to be a graduate to attend this,” emphasized Dahl. Anyone with a heart for Cyrus or a connection to Cyrus High School or the Cyrus Math, Science and Technology Elementary School is invited.

The main event for the weekend is an all-school reunion program at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, following the Cyrus Days Parade at 12:30 p.m.

During the last all-school reunion in 1989, more than 1,200 people attended the program – enough that some attendees had to watch from big screen TVs set up outside.

Following the program there will be a catered supper in the school cafeteria. Registration for the meal closes on Wednesday, May 15. After supper, there will be a final Homecoming dance at 7 p.m. and fireworks on the old football field at dark.

The Cyrus school building will also be open throughout the weekend for self-guided tours with Cyrus memorabilia on display.

On Sunday, there will be a contemporary church service at 9:30 a.m., a final flag-lowering ceremony and a “CHS Tribute” balloon release. The Cyrus Fire Department will also be hosting a pancake feed in the elementary gymnasium.
