Verna E. Carlisle, 93, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, November 26, 2007 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.
Verna Estella Tommerdahl was born to Tillie (Dahl) and Oliver Tommerdahl on Jan. 16, 1914 in Erie, Minn. (Pennington County). She was the oldest daughter of 11 children. In 1929, during the depression, they moved to the Detroit Lakes area. Being the oldest, Verna was called upon to help her mother raise her younger siblings.
Verna married Joseph Carlisle on Oct. 16, 1940 in Erie Township. They lived in Dilworth, Minn., for a short time prior to moving back to Detroit Lakes in 1941; Verna would continue to live there for the remainder of her life. Following her husband Joe's death in December 2000, Verna moved into Emmanuel Nursing Home, where she lived for seven years prior to her death.
Verna was a homemaker, a gardener, a farmer (raising chickens, pigs, cows, selling milk and eggs), a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother and a great-great grandmother. Her family was her life. She enjoyed family times, holidays and any gathering that brought her family together. She touched the lives of many as a sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.
Verna is survived by her four sons, Orville (Darlene) Carlisle of Frazee, Curtis (Darlene) Carlisle of St. Cloud, Minn., Terry (Betty) Carlisle of Detroit Lakes and Myron (Marie) Carlisle of Fargo; two daughters, Cheryl (Larry) Olson of Detroit Lakes and Patricia "Pat" (Jack) Burzette of Salome, Ariz.; two sisters, Dora (Gordon) Steinweg of Plymouth, Minn., and Ardis Marina of Las Vegas, Nev.; 20 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and more nieces and nephews than one can count.
Preceding her in death were her father, Oliver (1934); her mother, Tillie (1970); her husband, Joe (2000); her son, Kenneth (2001); her grandson, Jason (2001); five brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes.
