Gordon St. Claire

Gordon St. Claire, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, November 26, 2007, in the Minnesota Veterans Home, Fergus Falls.

Gordon B. St. Claire was born August 27, 1922, in Callaway, where he was raised by his great grandmother. At 15 years of age, he moved to Fargo to live with his mother. In February 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army with the 164th Infantry, and served in Guadalcanal and the Northern Solomons during World War II.

Gordon married Lois Hellem on Jan. 6, 1945, in St. Augustine, Fla. After Gordon's honorable discharge in August 1945, they made their home in Fargo until moving to the Minneapolis and Anoka, Minn., area in 1952. Gordon worked as a sheet metal worker for various firms including Peterson Penny Plumbing and Heating of Anoka, until he retired. He and Lois then moved back to Detroit Lakes. On Nov. 4, 2000, after 55 years of marriage, Gordon's wife Lois died. He continued to live in Detroit Lakes until he became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans' Home this spring.

Gordon received his GED when he was 60 years of age. He enjoyed hunting, playing cribbage, and spending time with family.

Gordon is survived by two daughters, Reni Ehlen of Two Harbors, Minn., and Rochelle St. Claire of Staunton, Va.; five grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and a half brother, Theodore LaDoux of The Dells, Ore.

In addition to his wife, Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Mae Peterson and Floyd Sweet; three half sisters, Marie, Mavis, and Debbie; and a half brother, Jim.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead; there will be visitation for one hour prior to services at the chapel. Inurnment will be in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Ulen.
