After a week in the deep freeze, temperatures finally moderated last weekend.  However the warmer weather came with freezing rain and snow, making for very difficult driving and walking conditions in the area.

In St. John’s/ Kongsvinger news: Ash Wednesday services will be held at Kongsvinger on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.   Services will then  alternate between St John’s and Kongsvinger until March 20.   There will be coffee and fellowship afterwards.

The February newsletter is now out.  Extra copies are available in the narthex of each church, along with the annual report.

From Good Shepherd Lutheran Church: There will be no adult education on Feb. 3.

Lenten services start with Ash Wednesday services on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m., and continue every Wednesday until March 20.

The February newsletter was e-mailed to members, but if you did not get one contact Clarice Dieter.  Copies are available in the hallway of the church.

Hosanna Worship Center in Morris will hold a Super Bowl party on Feb. 3 beginning at 4 p.m.

St. Mary's School will be holding their Annual Dinner/Auction on Feb. 16 at The Old No. 1 Southside.  Social hour and silent auction will begin at 5:30p.m., with dinner to follow at 6:30p.m.

An open house bridal shower honoring Melissa Zimmerman, bride-to-be of Erik Whittemore, will be held on Feb. 9, from 9-11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Chokio.

New Horizons Ag Services will have their annual meeting in Morris on Feb. 7.

On Feb. 4, the Red Hatters will meet at the Herman Bar and Grill which is temporarily located at the Herman American Legion at 9 a.m. Also, the bookmobile will be in Donnelly at 3:30 p.m., the city council meets at 7 p.m. at the city hall and Rendsville 4-H will meet at 7 p.m. at the fire hall.

There will be new window hours at the Donnelly Post Office, effective Feb. 9.   The window will be open from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Former   Donnelly area resident Curtis Weinreis of North Branch passed away on Jan. 23.  Survivors include his parents Jim and Doris Weinreis and their family.  Many of you will remember that his family owned and operated the Corner Café where the bar currently is in Donnelly.

Melvin Shackelford of Revillo, S.D. passed away on Jan. 22.   Survivors include his daughter; JoAnn (Michael) Lonergan of Morris.

Vern Olson of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away on Jan. 24. Survivors include his son Rev. Tim (Cyndi) Olson of  Iowa and their son Jonathan.  Tim was pastor at St John’s/Kongsvinger in the late ‘90s.

Daphne Nicole Bergstrom-Oelke was born on Jan. 8 to Jessica Bergstrom of Donnelly and Joe Oelke of Cyrus. Grandparents are Becky Bergstrom of Donnelly, and the late Charles Bergstrom and Lorie and Bret Oelke of Barrett, great grandmother is Irene Strand of Morris.

John DeLong celebrated his 90th birthday on Jan. 31.

The Morris Area Squirt hockey team took second place in a tournament in Wadena.   Brady Loge is a member of that team and his dad, Ryan, is one of the coaches.

Jacob Speer, son of Rollie and Tammi, placed fifth place in the heavyweight division for the Tigers in the West Central Conference wresting meet on Jan. 26.

Kris Wilke was elected as president of the Minnesota Jaycees on Jan 26.

Beth Holland was recently inducted into the National Honor Society at Morris Area High School.

Jim and Lou Eystad visited her aunt Marlys Alm at the West Wind Village on Jan 20.   Lou says she is doing well.

Mark Koepke and I attended the indoor sale at Heartland Motors on Jan. 25.   On Jan. 28, we visited Virginia Long and Corrine Flatten then stopped by my Aunt Pearl’s to wish her a belated happy birthday.  Her birthday was Jan 27.

Mark enjoyed a telephone call from his sister, Linda who lives in Wisconsin, on Jan 30.
