Fall Break

Fall break will be taking place on Monday, Oct. 15, and Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the University. Administrative offices will remain open.

Book Group--Wild Comfort

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, there will be a Book Group meeting from 7 until 8 p.m. in the Briggs Library McGinnis Room. The group will be discussing Wild Comfort.

Spanish Conversation Table

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. in Turtle Mountain Café, please join La Mesa de Conversación en la Universidad de Minnesota, Morris, otherwise known as the Spanish Conversation Table at UMM.  All are welcome!  Students, faculty, staff, and community members have casual conversations in Spanish about a variety of topics.  Meet new people and improve your Spanish.

Briggs Library Associates Book Sale

The Briggs Library Associates Annual Book Sale will be held in the Student Center's Oyate Hall on Thursday, Oct. 18, from 12 until 7 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 19, from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Soup and Substance

On Thursday, Oct. 18, there will be a discussion group held in the Moccasin Flower Room of the Student Center from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. This Soup and Substance, co-sponsored by the UMM Disability Alliance and Prairie Community Services, will focus on depression and anxiety, their effects on college students and community members, and the ways in which these effects can be addressed. All viewpoints are welcome. Soup and Substance is a dialogue series co-sponsored by campus and community organizations, designed to provide an affirming space for deep conversation about topics that deal in some way with social issues that intersect issues of privilege and oppression. Student leaders who have completed the Office of Community Engagement's facilitation training lead these dialogues. A light meal of soup and bread will be served.

Mixed Student Recital

On Thursday, Oct. 18, there will be a mixed student recital in the Humanities Fine Arts Recital Hall from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m.

Liz Miller and David Hamlow: You Complete Me

On Thursday, Oct. 18 there will be a Humanities Fine Arts Gallery opening for Liz Miller and David Hamlow from 7 until 9 p.m. The artists will lecture from 6 until 7 p.m.

GWSS Works in Progress Series, "Women, Reason and Science," Pieranna Garavaso - Philosophy

On Friday, Oct. 19, the second lecture in the Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies Works in Progress discussion series will take place. Entitled "Women, Reason and Science" and given by Pieranna Garavaso, the discussion will be held in the Moccasin Flower Room of the Student Center from 12 to 1 p.m. Each month, UMM faculty doing gender, women, and sexuality studies (gwss)-related scholarship will present their "work in progress." These informal and interactive discussion presentations will be as varied in subject and style as the scholars themselves! Each "work" showcased is at a different stage of production, but all of the presenters are looking for lively discussion and feedback from the audience. UMM students faculty, staff, students--and the larger community--are invited. Light refreshments will be served.

James Sewell Ballet

On Friday, Oct. 19, there will be a Performing Arts Series presentation of the James Sewell Ballet in the Student Center's Edson Auditorium from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m. Dance Macabre from the James Sewell Ballet is a new work inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, animating some of his most intriguing tales--"The Raven," "Annabel Lee," and "The Bells." The program also includes a new take on the Giselle Pas de Deux, the original ghost ballet, and the revival of Grave Matters. Beauty and the dark side - an early celebration of All-Hallows' Eve.

2012 Festival of Spanish Language Cinema

On Saturday, Oct.20, at 2 p.m. the 2012 Festival of Spanish Language Cinema will continue with Sidewalls/Medianeras (directed by Gustavo Taretto, 2011). Not rated. Each of the free screenings is held at the Morris Theatre (6th Street) and subtitled when available.
