We had some welcome rains on Friday and Tuesday evenings. The rest of the week has been sunny and dry.

From St. John's/ Kongsvinger parish: There will be joint services at St. John's at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 19. This is a change from what was announced earlier.

From Good Shepherd Lutheran Church: Vacation Bible School will be held Aug. 15 and 22. For more information, call the church at 585-6868.

The Thrivent picnic will be held on Aug. 15 at Pomme de Terre Park at 5:30 p.m. Call 589-1731 for details.

There will be an all-day fund raiser at the Pizza Ranch in Morris on Aug. 13 for the Feed My Starving Children food packing event. A portion of the proceeds and tips from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. will go to help with expenses for the event later this month.

On Aug. 13, the Donnelly Community Club and the firemen will meet at 7 p.m. at city hall and fire hall.

There will be a meet the candidates for the Threshing Bee royalty on Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Donnelly hall.

There will be an open house at the Morris Senior Center on Aug. 16 from 3-6 p.m.

Natalie Janae Zimenova was born on June 30 at Douglas County Hospital to Roman Zimen and Janet Zimenova. Grandparents are Merlyn and Angie Schwartz, of Donnelly.

Carter Daniel Erickson was born on June 16 at St. Cloud Hospital, to Dan and Jammie Erickson of Albany. Grandparents are Ron and Sue Wevley and Mark and Deb Erickson, all of Donnelly. Great-grandmothers are Liz Ascheman, Esther Wevley and Evelyn Raasch. There will be a baby shower for him Aug. 18 from 10 a.m.-noon in the gazebo at the Prairie Inn in Morris. Carter will be baptized at Kongsvinger on Saturday, Aug. 11.

There will be an open house bridal shower for Amy Gerber, bride to be of Blake Heinrich, today (Saturday) from 10 a.m. to noon in the Gazebo at the Prairie Inn, Morris. Blake is the son of Scott and Beth Heinrich of Morris. His grandmother is Lillian Heinrich. They will be married on Sept. 15 at the Heinrich farm by Donnelly.

Marian Raasch of Morris passed away on Aug. 1. Her survivors include a niece Deb (Mark) Erickson and their family of Donnelly.

Lowell Christians of Herman passed away on Aug. 4. His survivors include his sister Brenda (Jeff) Volker and their family.

Congratulations to Mike Cihak who was recently installed as an officer of the Morris Eagles.

Congratulations to Morris VFW auxiliary president Joan Kopacek who was given an award for outstanding auxiliary achievements at the 5th district VFW meeting on July 18.

Congratulations to Ashley Mecklenburg who graduated from Alex Tech earlier this year.

Congratulations to the Morris American Legion baseball team that finished in second place in the district tournament. The VFW team finished in third place at their tournament.

Congratulations to Dave Lonergan who was named Fair Person of the Year for 2012 for District 7. He has been on the Stevens County fair board for over 30 years.

Denny Anderson is now in the Starbuck Nursing Home following an operation to remove a brain tumor. I talked to him on the phone on Wednesday evening. He was in good spirits and said to tell everybody thanks for all their prayers and get well wishes. For more info visit

The Threshing Bee royalty were in the Flekkefest parade in Elbow Lake on Aug. 4. The highlight of the parade was the appearance of the University of Minnesota marching band.

The Donnelly Threshing Bee is Aug. 25 and 26. This year's feature is Oliver. The theme is The 'Bee' -- Something for Everyone." There will be many of the favorite events again this year, with a pancake feed, softball tournament, kiddie parade, tractor pull, queen coronation and a dance at the hall featuring "Pure Country." New this year is a smoke house sponsored by the Donnelly Fire Department,

The Community Club is conducting a "Silent Auction" on Aug. 26 near the Depot from 2 - 4 p.m. This fundraiser is to support the upgrade for the Royalty float. Any business, individual, or organization that would like to donate an item or cash in addition to what has been donated, may contact Sandy Dunn at 246-329. She is still looking for pictures of former queens; if you have any, let her know.

There will be a work night on the grounds on Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m. to help get ready for the Bee. All you need do is show up and we will put you to work.
