Donnelly News

Instead of a white Christmas, we had a white New Year's day after some rain turned to freezing drizzle then snow. This made for some slippery roads over the weekend. Some strong winds also made it feel colder than it was but temperatures warmed up to record levels for the end of the week.

In St. John's/ Kongsvinger parish news: The regular schedule resumes on Jan. 8 with services at Kongsvinger at 8:30 a.m. followed by coffee in the church basement. Services will be held at 11 a.m. at St. John's with coffee beforehand. The parish Sunday school will be held at Kongsvinger at 9:45 a.m. This will also be communion Sunday as well as on Jan. 15.

The January newsletter for the parish is now out. Extra copies are available in the narthex of each church.

From Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Morris: Adult forums will resume in the church following coffee hour on Jan. 8. New member Sunday is Jan. 15.

The movie "Courag-eous" will be shown on Jan. 8 at the Morris Evangelical Free Church. A free will offering will be collected.

First Lutheran Church of Morris will have an Epiphany tree burning service at 5 p.m. Sunday at the gravel pit east of Morris followed by a chili supper at the church.

Rev. Paul Erdal will be installed as the new pastor of First Lutheran Church on Jan. 15 at the 8:15 and 10:45 a.m. services. A pot luck dinner will be held after the second service.

The movie "A Shot in the Dark" will be shown at First Lutheran on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. A free will offering will be taken.

Habit for Humanity will hold their annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on Jan. 15 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Morris American Legion.

The Donnelly branch of the United Farmers and Merchants State Bank is open on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Red Hatters will meet on Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. at Place to Be in Donnelly.

Danny and Yvonne Kloos and I attended the visitation and funeral for Helen Kloos. As I have said before, the "upside" of attending a funeral is meeting with people you have not seen for a long time. Friday was one of those times as this was the first time I had seen all of Thelma (Kloos) Brandt's girls in many years.

Millie Asmus of Morris, formerly of the Donnelly area, passed away on Jan. 2. Her funeral is today (Saturday).

Lynn and Shelia Shultz and I attended New Year's Eve services at Zion Lutheran Church of Morris on Dec. 31.

Ellen Wilts, Lou Eystad, Jerry Itzen and I helped with commodity distribution at the Morris Senior Center on Jan. 4. Lou said that Jim was in the hospital but he was discharged on Thursday.

Pastor Mike Hanson, Chuck Spohr and I enjoyed lunch together at the Common Cup on Jan. 4.
