Talking it Over: Here comes the new year

Katie Erdman

You can almost hear a collective sigh of relief as the biggest portion of the holiday is over. Soon 2011 will be history and we will start making plans and memories in 2012.

For myself, I am hoping the new year will bring health, wealth and happiness. I don't ask for much, just a good share of each. Add a little fun, work, relaxation and spontaneity and it could be a great year.

I have given up on making resolutions. They only last a few weeks into a new year for me. However, I do try to set some goals and make a few plans of things I want to accomplish in the new year. This has been a little more satisfactory and easier to complete.

I try not to make the goals unattainable or have plans that I know I can't accomplish. Instead I keep things simple and straight-forward. Things I know I can do, if I put my mind to it. For example, rather than saying I am going travel around the world, I allow myself a small trip several times during the year. Then I can add to the goal if I feel like achieving more. I have had some luck with this plan, much more than making a resolution.

Perhaps you want to learn more about the many new gadgets on the market today. Set a goal to start simple, with some of the basic instruments and work from there. Maybe just getting more familiar with computers and internet can help you with many of these things.

There are also some more personal goals that you can set. Perhaps there are people you have not spoken to or seen for several years. Just trying to contact one or two of these people can be the start of something wonderful. Maybe it could be in the form of a letter, card, phone call, email or on facebook. There are always people out there waiting to hear from long-lost friends and relatives.

The possibilities are endless and each individual has their own desires and goals. The challenge is to figure them out, make them attainable and then set out to achieve them. Most importantly, don't get down on yourself if you don't accomplish things as you hoped. Simply making the effort is better than doing nothing at all.

I hope the new year is good for each of you and that you can accomplish many of your goals.
