MORRIS - The Stevens County Sheriff's Department has recovered the body of Hancock Police Chief Donald Heikkinen in Long Lake.

Heikkinen was boating on Long Lake on Sunday night with five other boaters when their 14 foot craft, registered to Brian Krupke of Hancock, Minn., capsized about 10:15 p.m. The other five safely made it to shore.

Sheriff Randy Willis said Heikkinen's body was found at 3:55 p.m. on Monday. The body is being taken to Ramsey County for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The Sheriff's Department is continuing its investigation of the boating accident to determine what happened. Willis said the investigation will resume tomorrow.

Water rescue/recovery teams from Douglas, Pope Crow Wing Counties assisted with the search. A team from Hennepin County was en route to Long Lake to assist with more sophisticated search equipment, but the body was recovered before they arrived.

The City of Hancock's website was updated on Monday night with a message about Heikkinen's death.

"Today we have lost one of our own," the site read. "Donald Heikkinen has left us to fight crime above the clouds. To our Dear Friend and Co-Worker we will truly miss you may you rest in peace."

Heikkinen was named Hancock's police chief in October of 2000.

Long Lake is about located about three miles southwest of Cyrus or eight miles east of Morris.

More information will be released when it is available.
