Area weather: Another wet weekend in store -- What else is new

Some severe weather impacted the state over the weekend. On Saturday, there were reports of large hail in Stearns, Goodhue, and Rice counties. Also, some large trees were down in some spots of Goodhue and Rice counties as well. In Steele County four inches of rain also fell over the weekend.

On Sunday, most of the bumpy weather was noted in northern Minnesota. Polk and Marshall counties had tree branches that were torn-off some trees due to very strong winds that moved through that part of the state in the early morning hours.

Most of the state did enjoy a nice Sunday. Cooler and drier air settled-in and brought great conditions as well through Monday under the influence of high pressure. However, by Tuesday more severe weather was reported across the Upper Midwest as warm and moist air along with an area of low pressure pushed through the state.

It would be nice to get a week of quiet weather and comfortable temperatures and low humidity levels. However, more showers and thunderstorms are possible for this upcoming weekend. What else is new, right?

Have a great upcoming weekend!

Mark Anthony, Chief Meteorologist

Weather history: In 1910 very large hailstones hit Todd and Wadena Counties. One stone weighed in at over five pounds.

Weather fact: Hail forms when tiny clumps of ice, kept aloft by strong updraughts, get blown through freezing thunderclouds until they are heavy enough to fall to earth. Most large thunderstorms create some hail, but conditions must be met if the hailstones are to grow large, freeze solid, and survive until they reach the ground.
