Happy Birthday Morris Public Library - 1886 - 2011

This year we are celebrating 125 years of service to the Morris area. Watch for celebrations all year long. There was birthday cake in the library May 5. I hope you joined us for a piece of it. There is an exhibit in the entry featuring the history of the library. Our history is intertwined with the Stevens County History Museum (Carnegie Library building site) and the old Armory which once upon a time housed the library in its early days.

According to the Morris Sun newspaper of April 22, 1986, it was on May 5, 1886 when a group of residents met in the office of attorney G.E. Darling to include the library in the first village charter. The first library was located on the second floor of the old wooden fire hall and in 1902 it was moved to the old armory across the street. Morris residents were allowed to use the library for $3 a year, paid in advance.

The Friends of the Morris Public Library purchased a glass tower display cabinet for the library. We hope to feature a variety of community displays of general interest. So if you are an organization or as an individual have a special hobby or pastime you would like to share, think about reserving it. We thank the Morris City crew for getting it safely off the truck for us. It came in a huge semi-truck trailer.

The Morris Public Library has a wonderful opportunity to take a bus load of people to view the King Tut exhibit in St Paul. Funding for the outing is provided by the Minnesota Legacy Arts funding thru the Viking Library System. Bus transportation and admission tickets to the exhibit will be paid for about 50 people to attend. So, if you are have the time Saturday, June 25, call the library and reserve your spot today.
