Cyrus Scoop

The students are not the only things growing at Cyrus, Math, Science and Technology Elementary School this spring.

On Tuesday, May 3, with the help of Douglas Stahman, Steve Just, and Richard Weyers, the students planted approximately fifty more trees on the school grounds in celebration of Arbor Day. Seedling trees were made available to schools from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The DNR provides trees to schools to encourage educational projects. Some projects they encourage include using the seedlings as a teaching tool, creating a school forest, or other public area, planting windbreaks, and shelterbelts or using them for an erosion control project. The students have enjoyed caring for and watching the progress of the 100 trees that were planted last spring. They are excited to watch the progress of the newly planted trees and the existing ones over the next year.

Just like area farmers, the students are anxious to get in the field and continue their work with the community garden sponsored by a grant from West Central Wellness. We will be spending some time out in the garden in the upcoming weeks. The early produce we will be planting include potatoes, carrots, onions, lettuce and spinach. As the soil warms up we will be planting tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, green peppers and other warm soil vegetables.

Again, summer care of our garden will continue by the garden club that was created last summer. Those who help maintain the garden throughout the summer are encouraged to harvest produce for their families to enjoy. The Cyrus Child Care Center, housed in the school, also reaped the benefits of the garden. The students harvested, ate and sold extra produce at the Cyrus Community Market. The childcare center sold enough to purchase a treat during a field trip to Morris!
