Pre-Kindergarten news:

During this short week we have been having fun with math games Shisima and Nine Holes. Games add fun to the day, enhance skill development, provide an incentive to learn specific skills and encourage new thinking.  Math games offer rich opportunities for children to reinforce and strengthen their developing mathematics skills.  While playing games, children learn to apply rules consistently, follow sequences, match actions and symbols, learn the logic of strategies, and apply their growing understanding of numbers.  Many games integrate literacy skills, such as using symbols, tracking and sequencing, reading, and communicating with other players.  Perhaps most importantly, games enhance children's social skills - children learn teamwork and gain experience to resolve conflicts.

First and Second Grade News:

In our reading class we have been reading about bears.  We have studied the polar bear and the brown bear.  Each of us made a non-fiction book about polar bears.  One of our favorite fictional stories about a brown bear is called The Biggest Bear by Lynn Ward.

Third and Fourth Grade News:

We have just finished learning how to research a topic by using the Internet, encyclopedias, and a resource book.  Students chose a country he or she would like to visit and found many interesting facts about it.  After arranging the information on a poster, we practiced good presentation skills (like good eye contact and clear voice) and told the class about what we learned.  We are very excited to start learning about electricity next week!

Fifth and Sixth Grade News:

The fifth and sixth grade students have started a unit on fractions in math.  We are exploring mixed numbers, improper fractions and equalivent fractions.  We are exploring these concepts through hands on experiences.  The students will especially enjoy using and eating M&M's to demonstrate different concepts about fractions at the end of the week.  Later in the unit, the students will learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.  They are looking forward to learning these concepts that aren't 1/2 bad.
