A Morris native has returned to buy the Snap Fitness facility in her hometown.

Dr. Michelle Lelwica purchased Snap this month and met with staff last week. Buying Morris' Snap Fitness is in keeping with Lelwica's career-long goal of combining chiropractic and workouts to improve health and well-being, said Lelwica, who also owns the Snap Fitness in Pequot Lakes.

"It's a good combination," she said.

Giving back to her hometown also played into Lelwica's decision. Her father, Keith Kirwin, is a life-long Morris resident, and mother Patricia (Lesmeister) Nelson, moved back to Morris about a year ago. Lelwica's brothers, Shawn Kirwin and Jason Kirwin, also live in the area.

"That was a good reason to come back," Lelwica said.

Lelwica graduated from Morris High School in 1984. She earned her undergraduate degree in science and health fitness from Gustavus Adolphus College. She then earned her chiropractic degree at what is now Northwestern Health Sciences University.

She worked in the Twin Cities with the idea of incorporating gym workouts with her practice. A clinic she worked at in Hopkins teamed up with a Snap Fitness there and Lelwica liked the results.

Lelwica moved to Pequot Lakes and opened a practice and Snap Fitness in 2007. Lelwica will continue living in Pequot Lakes and run the Morris Snap Fitness with the assistance of manager Dawn Lembcke and personal trainer Stacey Vig.

"Health fitness will be the focus," she said. "As the Baby Boomers continue to age, fitness will be important."
