Easy to be thankful

I enjoy writing my column around Thanksgiving time because the subject is so easy. I have so much to be thankful for and if you give it some thought, most Americans also have a lot to be thankful for.

What immediately comes to mind is our freedoms. Those basic rights given to us by our ancestors and defended through the years by millions. Not just our soldiers but also our lawmakers, leaders and even voters.

We have the freedom to choose our religious affiliation or even to not choose one. We can speak out freely for our beliefs and do pretty much anything we wish as long as it does not break the law.

We are able to send our children to wonderful, free public schools and if we choose, pay for private schooling or even teach them ourselves at home.

Those of us living in rural America have even more for which to be thankful. We can walk out of our homes into fresh, clean air and see for miles around us. We have wide open spaces, clean lakes and rivers, and land on which to live, grow food or build habitats. Nature surrounds us with beauty and wildlife is abundant.

Communication is wonderful in our world. Once it took time to hear from loved ones through letters and rare phone calls. Today we can see, hear, text, type and communicate through a vast number of new methods. Technology has not only made life easier but helped families and friends stay close, informed and in touch.

Our food supply is endless. We are free to go to any store of our choice to purchase our needs or we can grow our own. Freezers, pantries, cupboards and store rooms are filled with enough food and supplies to last us weeks, months or even years.

Health care is phenomenal even if it may be expensive. You don't find people dying from diseases that have had cures for years. New methods of treatments and medications are giving many a longer life. When we do get sick, there are great places to go to recover and wonderful professionals to provide that care.

In reality we all have a lot to be thankful for. Let us remember that, not only at Thanksgiving time but each and every day throughout the year.
