Hancock Library News

Busy summer times---The 4th is coming this weekend, as are many family activities, outings, vacations, and reunions. July 4, 2010 (the legal public holiday for Independence Day), falls on a Sunday. For most federal employees, Monday, July 5, will be treated as the holiday and so the Library will be closed on Monday, July 5.

I love winter, at least that is until summer comes. I sometimes forget how much I like summer. On these summer days when the sun comes out and I look out my window, the bright blue sky and warm temperatures remind me of all the beauty and enjoyment of living here in the summer. The crickets at night, the owls in the morning, and the smell of the fresh cut hay and a fresh rain all take me back to a time when I was about ten years old. It was summer. I woke up to the sun streaming through my window. My mom had the radio on and I got up and the day was beautiful. I played all day and enjoyed that summer sunshine and camped out under the stars at night, so the rain may come and the rain may go. The skies may be gray and overcast some days but when the sun comes out, those are the days I remember the best!

With this summer sunshine, comes (hopefully) idle afternoons, and the inevitable book lists meant to fill up sunny, idle afternoons with reading. They are called beach reads or summer reading lists, these lists are different things to different people. Sometimes they are mindless books that you don't have to think about to hard and for others they are just the opposite, harder and books that you always meant to read but just never got around to it, like books by Ernest Hemingway or F. Scott Fitzgerald or A Tale of Two Cities or some of the other classics. For me a good summer read seems to be more about the setting of the book, like maybe a beach or a coastal town. Whatever your preference, I hope you find that perfect book to enjoy.

Our summer program has been going really well with lots of kids and participation. We will resume again after the 4th of July vacation with our next program incorporating the theme of being a castaway on an island. A great book for a little older youth incorporating this theme is "Island of the Blue Dolphins." It is an excellent book I just reread, check it out!!

See ya at the Library!
