Honoring Kurt

It was hard to get by the lump in my throat and tears in my eyes as I sat through the memorial service for Kurt Kruize on Sunday. However, when all was done I had to smile at the way the community and area came together to honor this alumnus, former resident and Hometown Hero.

When first approached about helping to plan this service I was flattered and humbled to be able to work on something so important for the family and community and hopefully begin a healing process for many. As I talked to people about providing equipment, facilities, food, music, special messages and just plain physical assistance I was surprised and pleased with the many positive responses. It really was the result of many people coming together for one cause.

Naturally with any event one plans there are bound to be a few glitches and we had some but the service went on without interruption because of the last minute help of many kind individuals. Anytime an event is planned you know the date and time cannot work for everyone, but I was pleased that so many people took the time or re-scheduled to be there for Kurt and his family.

I want to say a special thank you to Pastor Becky Worner, Pastor Harrison Newhouse and Pastor Julius Miller for their part in the service. Thank you to Heidi Thoma for the beautiful music and to Tammy, Kari and Torrie for their music, the slide show and pictures.

It was wonderful of the school to allow us to have the service there and for Judy Johnson to be there for last minute help. I can't thank the Hancock Lions enough for their help and Brett Nelson and Gregg Cunningham for their expertise in sound and video. Thank you to the Commercial Club for the flowers at the service. There are others too who helped with the set up, taking down, making or serving food and other areas but I can't begin to list them all.

Also a special thank you to the Morris Color Guard who stepped up and provided more than was asked of them and to the Patriot Guard, Hancock Police and Fire Department for the heart wrenching escorts. There are many more who helped in some way and it was so very appreciated.

Lastly, thank you to everyone who attended and helped our community show our thanks and respect for Kurt and the sacrifice of him and his family. He will always be our hero.
