Area Weather: Weather for fishing opener looks to be mild

The rain this week just seemed to keep coming and coming. Finally, and just in time for the weekend, some drier air is returning. The past week to 10 days has been "unusual." We have seen some snow in the state, temperatures about 20 degrees cooler than average, rain and more rain, and now temperatures in the 60s and 70s for today and for the weekend. Was this weather unusual? Certainly we were cooler than average, but temperatures in Minnesota in the spring can be all over the place. Also, snow is not uncommon in Minnesota. However, Duluth received 4.4" of snow and this was the third most snow reported during the month of May. In addition, there is a lot of standing water throughout the area. Many ditches and fields have a great deal of standing water as I drive around. Some spots have seen over two inches of rain over the past week. Flooding concerns have returned along the Red River. Flooding is something too that we haven't experienced really since March and early April. Morris received about a 1.50" of rain from Tuesday and Wednesday alone. The good news is that the Minnesota fishing opener looks nice with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s very likely along with a partly cloudy sky. The wind will be out of the east southeast at around 5 to 15 mph. It sounds like a wonderful weekend to go after some great tasting Minnesota walleye. Good luck and be safe on area lakes and highways.

In 1935 Minneapolis set a record high temperature of 95 degrees! Temperatures throughout the state were in the 80s and 90s as well.

Wet air is lighter than dry air.
