Area Weather: Severe weather a threat this time of year

This was Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota. We had the statewide tornado drill on Thursday and that was a time to get ready for the upcoming severe weather season. If you didn't do a drill with your family, or at your place of business, take time to do so. Nationally, an average of 80 people die annually from tornadoes, and over 1,500 people are injured each year.

In Minnesota, we average about 26 tornadoes each season. Many of them are on the weak end as EF-0 and EF-1 tornadoes, but they still can cause damage and injuries. Thankfully, only about 0.10 percent of tornadoes are the strongest EF-5 tornadoes. These tornadoes have winds of greater than 200 miles per hour.

In 1910 a snowstorm hit parts of northern Minnesota. Duluth picked up 6.5" of snow!

If a tornado is in your area, go to a small interior room on the lowest floor. Bathrooms and closets, or even interior halls, are your best protection in such a situation.
