Wednesday's Area Weather: Rain finally falls

Spring is certainly here.

We had a great weekend with lots of sunshine and highs in the 60s and 70s across the state. This week we finally received some much needed rain around the state. Some spots received more rain than others, but there were some isolated thunderstorms around the state as well.

Also this week, we had our first severe weather of the season on Monday morning down in southwestern Minnesota. Quarter-size hail was reported around Pipestone and Tracy. This is always a reminder, with the first storms of the year, that your family should be ready for the upcoming severe weather season. Anytime there is a severe thunderstorm there is always a chance that a tornado could pop up. Coming up next week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota. Next week I will have some tips for you to keep you and your family safe.

If you are a weather fan, I will be offering a 3 credit class at Alex Tech College online in Intro to Meteorology. You can go to their website for more details! This is a great way for you to learn more about how weather works. Have a great week!

In 1886 a tornado hit the St. Cloud-Sauk Rapids areas. It left 72 people dead. About 80 percent of all buildings in Sauk Rapids were leveled as the tornado expanded to 800 yards across. As it crossed the Mississippi River some say that the river was "swept dry" during the tornado crossing.
