Erskine woman sentenced in hunting-dog cruelty case

CROOKSTON -- A woman accused of mistreating hunting dogs in rural Erskine was ordered Monday to serve 10 days in jail and a year on probation.

Rebecca Rae Thompson, 34, pleaded guilty to 29 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

On June 29, authorities seized 29 hunting dogs from Soaring Eagle Setters, a dog-breeding operation run by Thompson and Mikki Jay Johnson.

Authorities said the dogs were underweight and suffering from diarrhea. They were reportedly kept in a poorly ventilated outbuilding. One dog in poor condition had to be euthanized. The dogs were taken to the Pennington County Humane Society in Thief River Falls, and many were adopted.

Johnson, 36, was sentenced in December to 10 days in jail and a year of probation. Johnson and Thompson together must pay for the dogs' medical expenses. The pair was ordered to stay out of the animal business.
