As I was writing my column last week it started snowing and then stormed most of Thursday forcing most schools in the area to cancel classes. Much of the weekend was spent digging out again, a task made more difficult by temperatures well below zero. It has moderated some this week but it still felt cold due to the wind.

In news from the St. John's/Kongsvinger parish: The January newsletter is now out and extra copies are available in the narthex of each church.

Parish Bible study on Psalms 23 begins at 10 a.m. on Jan. 28 at St. John's and will be repeated at Kongsvinger at 7 p.m.

The area youth organization will be going tubing at Andes Tower Hill on Jan. 17. Meet at Kongsvinger at 1:30 p.m. to pool rides. Supper will follow. If you want to sign up or have any questions, call 246-3293 or 246-3292.

The annual meeting for St. John's will be held on Jan. 24 following the 11 a.m. worship service. A potluck dinner will follow.

Kongsvinger's annual meeting will be held on Jan. 31 following joint services at 11 a.m., followed by a potluck dinner.

Habit for Humanity will have their annual pancake breakfast at the American Legion in Morris on Jan. 17 from 8 a.m. -12:30 p.m. A free will offering will be taken.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is presenting two workshops: "Keeping the Farm in the Family". They will be held Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m. and Monday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. in Morris. Please RSVP to 589-1731.

The Learning Unlimited program "Understanding Afghanistan" has been postponed to Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. at the conference room of the USDA Soils Lab in Morris.

The Donnelly Rod & Gun Club's Ice House Fishing Contest will be held today (Saturday) from 11 a.m.-4 pm. on Cottonwood Lake near Donnelly. Contact Brad Backman at 246-3307 with questions

The bank and the Post Office in Donnelly will be closed on Jan. 18 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

Jada Leigh Wittern is the first baby born in 2010 at Stevens Community Medical Center and thus was the winner of many prizes. Jada was born at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Her parents are Jeremyah and Nicole Wittern of Donnelly, grandparents are Becky and late Charlie Bergstrom, great grandparents are Burton and Irene Strand all of Donnelly. She went to see her great grandparents on Jan. 9.

Claudia Anderson of Morris, formerly of Donnelly, passed away on Jan. 4. Her son Fritz and his father John Spohr of Donnelly are among the family who survive her.

Wally McCollar informs me that the MHS class of '55 is planning a 55 year reunion for later this year. The students who started school in Donnelly are planning on having their own mini-reunion at the same time. Tentative plans call for it to be held during Prairie Pioneer Days in Morris this coming July. In addition to Wally, some of the classmates from the Donnelly area are Joanne Frank, Wayne Speer, Edith Speer, Ruth Stambaugh, Curtis Sax, and David Aanerud. Sonja Sather went to school with them in Donnelly but did not graduate from Morris. If you are a member of this class or have a family member who is and want more information, call Wally at 589-0127.

Jody and Colleen Wilke of St. Cloud came and visited his mother Pearl A. Anderson and left on Saturday.
