I usually check my boxes on Wednesday afternoon and write my column on that evening. Please note that there may be occasions when the weather will prevent me from getting into town to check the boxes before my deadline.

As I was writing my column last week the forecast was for a major winter storm to hit our area over Christmas. Thankfully it was not nearly as bad in our area as predicated. Travel was difficult at times especially late on Christmas Eve, causing several churches including Kongsvinger to cancel Christmas day services. There was also some blowing and drifting over the weekend and the roads were only in fair driving condition.

In news from the St. John's/Kongsvinger parish: On Jan. 3, services will be at 8:30 a.m. at Kongsvinger and 11 a.m. at St. John's. There will be no Sunday School. The regular schedule will resume on Jan. 10.

The West Central Area WordAlone chapter will meet today (Saturday) at the Glenwood Retirement Village (719 2nd St. SE) and not at the church in Glenwood. Coffee is at 9:30 a.m. and the program begins at 10 a.m.

HD & Co. in Donnelly will be closed today (Saturday).

Former Donnelly residents Doddie Overson Williams and Elaine Overson Storck are starting a "Donnelly Girls" get-together on the second Saturday of January and July each year. The first one will be at 1 p.m. on Jan. 9 at the Culvers Restaurant in Rogers, Minn. The address is 13605 Northdale Boulevard. in Rogers. Any ladies who have ever lived in Donnelly are welcome to attend. Any questions, call Doddie at 763-477-5360 or Elaine at 612-385-8295.

Learning Unlimited will meet on Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. The meeting place and program are to be announced .

Nicole Lee Mellgren was born on Nov. 29 at the Douglas County Hospital, Alexandria, to Jennifer and Mark Mellgren of Sauk Centre. Grandparents are Jeff and Brenda Volker of Morris formerly of Donnelly, and Jan and Larry Mellgren of Long Prairie. Great-grandparents include Lloyd Volker of Barrett, and Florence Christians of Herman.

Congratulations to Jake Long of the West Central Area Knights wrestling team for winning the championship at 145 lbs at the Big Bear wrestling tournament in Cass Lake on Dec. 19.

On Dec. 20 Joyce Steuck and I enjoyed a performance by the New Wine troupe from First Lutheran at the West Wind Village.

On Dec. 22, I attended the open house at the new office building of New Horizons Ag Services in Herman.

Afterwards, I visited with Selma Bruse at her apartment in Herman. Later several of us watched some of the girls and boys basketball games at MAHS,

On Dec. 23 en route to Morris I stopped in to visit my aunt, Pearl A. Anderson and wish her a Merry Christmas. On the way home I did the same with my other aunt Pearl (Albert) Anderson. I also stopped into McCollar Jewelry to visit with Wally and wish him a Merry Christmas.

In the evening, a good crowd was on hand at Kongsvinger for the second performance of the Sunday School program "Sing a Song of Christmas." Thanks to Supt. Laura Lehman, the teachers, the kids and everyone else who helped put the program together.

Several of us attended the Living Nativity Christmas Eve service at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris.

In the evening, Jim and Lou Eystad were among those of us from the area who braved the elements to attended the candlelight service at St. John's.

On Dec. 20, Jim and Lou Eystad visited at the Heartland Home in Morris to deliver some presents and have some coffee with some of the residents. They were also recently at the DAC tea and visited Dave and Lavone Day and their son Kevin last week. On Christmas Day, Jim and Lou attended the community dinner at First Lutheran Church in Morris. Neil Thielke of Morris was a visitor at their house on Dec. 26 en route to Fargo.

Sam and Dorothy Jordheim spent some time over the weekend visiting Jeff and Gayle Gibson and family in Avon

Bonnie and Jim Fabian of Herman stopped in to see her mother Pearl A. Anderson on Dec. 23. Larry, Peggy, Cassie and Kris Wilke spent some time visiting her on Christmas Day. Larry and Peggy took Kris back to her home in Phoenix, AZ and are planing to stay there a while.
