Benson man faces charges after hitting cop

BENSON -- A 21-year-old Benson man is facing charges of fourth-degree assault of a peace officer, obstructing the legal process, criminal damage to property and terroristic threats after he allegedly threatened and assaulted law enforcement officers in Benson.

According to a news release from Benson Police Chief Jim Crace, an officer from his department responded to a possible drug overdose around 8:45 p.m. Monday along the 400 block of Ninth Street North.

The officer located the person who had reportedly overdosed and noticed he appeared to be intoxicated and aggressive. The man threatened the officer, hit and pushed him and ripped his two-way radio off his jacket as the officer was attempting to call for backup and an ambulance. The struggle continued and the men ended up on the front lawn of the home, where a Swift County Sheriff's deputy arrived to assist. The officers deployed a Taser to gain control of the man. The man was taken by ambulance to Swift County Benson Hospital. He was later transferred to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar for further care.
