Wednesday's Area Weather: Snowstorms on way in southern areas

It certainly looks a lot more like the Christmas season these days with the snow on the ground. Our first significant snowfall will push through the state beginning Tuesday. Southern Minnesota will take the brunt of this snowstorm. Some spots could pick-up more than a foot of snow!

The winds will also be a problem as a strong pressure gradient will push through the Upper Midwest. An area of low pressure pushed out of the Rockies and into the Central Plain states early in the week. Winds in excess of 30 mph were reported across portions of the state, creating near white-out conditions.

Drier air should return by Thursday and Friday with highs only in the teens. Wind chill values will stay below zero through Friday. We should begin to moderate with our temperatures by Sunday and Monday. If you are planning on doing some traveling make sure that you have your cell phone with you and take along a winter survival kit. Southern Minnesota could be very difficult to travel across on Wednesday. For road reports this season you may also call 511! Be smart and stay safe.

In 2003 a "significant snowstorm" pushed through the state with heavy snow of between 6 to 10 inches falling from Southwestern Minnesota to the Twin Cities Metro area. Winds were clocked across the state at between 25 to 30 mph. Although some parts of far South Central Minnesota only picked up 4 to 6 inches of snow, winds in this area were stronger and created near-blizzard conditions. Ten inches of snow were recorded at Lamberton, Springfield and Gaylord!

Blizzard warnings are issues by the National Weather Service when heavy snow is reported with sustained or frequent winds of 35 mph or higher with considerable falling and/or snowing snow that frequently reduces visibility to 1/4 of a mile or less.
