Area Weather: Low temps indicate summer is winding down

The summer is really winding down. I hate to say it, but it has had a feeling recently of autumn in the air hasn't it?

Overnight lows have been chilly and high school football, along with college and even pro football are upon us!

Temperatures were cool for the midweek this past week, but we are going to warm-up for the weekend into next week. Some 80s are very possible across most of the area.

In 1883 the 4th deadliest tornado in Minnesota history hit Rochester. The tornado killed 31 residents and injured 100 more. Appalled by the lack of medical care received by the tornado's victims, Mother Alfred Moes, founder of the Sisters of St. Francis, proposed to build and staff a hospital if Dr. W.W. Mayo would provide medical care. St. Marys Hospital opened in 1889 with 27 beds and eventually grew into the Mayo Clinic.

To put rainfall in perspective, if a given place, for example Morris, were to have 30 inches of rain in a year, it would have had about one billion raindrops per square yard of ground!
