The VFW Auxiliary of Post 5039 in Morris are again planning a salad luncheon for cancer aid and research. It will be held at Old #1 Southside on Thursday, July 23, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and they will again be serving delicious salads.

I am planning on taking potato salad as we have an abundance of potatoes in our garden. I know there will be many very good salads and now with some many garden items ready, it is fun and easy to make many different kinds. So I decided to share some salad recipes with you. One of the favorite of my kids and I make it when they are home over the 4th of July is Broccoli and Cauliflower Salad.

1/2 head of broccoli or a small head

1/2 head of cauliflower or small head

1 medium onion or larger if you like onion

1 cup of sunflower seed (not in the shell)

1 cup raisins

6 slices of bacon

1 cup Miracle Whip

1/2 cup sugar

2 T. vinegar

Fry bacon until crisp, set aside. Break broccoli and cauliflower into bite size pieces, add onion and raisins. Pour dressing over this. Just before serving add bacon pieces and sunflower seeds.

Another recipe for a broccoli salad and I thought sounded interesting:

1 package broccoli slaw found in most supermarkets or you could grate your own broccoli into slivers.

5-6 onion tops, chopped

1/2 cup oleo

2 packages ramen noodles, chicken flavored.

1/4 cup sesame seeds

1 small package slivered almonds

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup oil

1/4 cup vinegar

1 tsp soy sauce

Season pack from noodles

Combine broccoli and onion tops in a bowl. In a saucepan brown noodles, sesame seeds and almonds in oleo. Mix together sugar, oil, vinegar, soy sauce, salt, pepper and season packs from noodles. Mix all together just before serving. Enjoy!
