Donnelly News

Remember that with school out and churches on their summer schedules, there are fewer news events. So any news about any upcoming events such as a family or class reunion or anything else would be welcome.

The rain we had over the weekend was very welcome and gave crops in the area a nice boost. Some of the days and especially the nights in the past week have been rather cool.

In news from St. John's/Kongsvinger: The June newsletter is now out and extra copies are available in the narthex of each church.

June 14th is Gideon day Sun in the parish. A representative from the Gideons will be giving a message at both churches and accepting donations for the Gideons' work.

The St. John's/ Kongsvinger parish will be joining with Bethel Lutheran in Herman for Vacation Bible Sshool on August 2-6 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Bethel in Herman. This year's theme is "serve" and will be led by staff from Luther Crest Bible camp. All children in both communities are invited to participate. The deadline to register is June 15. Registration forms are available at both church offices.

Luther Crest is having an All- staff Alumni reunion on August 7-9, 2010. If you were a staff member at Luther Crest at any time, please contact them with your name, address, years served, etc.

The Chokio United Methodist Church will hold a closing service on June 14 at 9 a.m. at the church. All past and present members are encouraged to attend.

The Morris Evangelical Free Church will hold a community worship service at East Side Park on June 14 at 10 a.m.

There will be a Reclaim worship conference at Luther Seminary on June 19 and 20. Former Donnelly resident Rev. Luther Johnson is one of the organizers of the national conference.

An open house bridal shower for Jenalenae Heinrich, bride to be of James Burrow, will be held today (Saturday) from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Morris Senior Center. Jena is the daughter of Scott and Beth Heinrich of Morris and granddaughter of Lillian Heinrich.

Aanerud Field in Donnelly is host to a Little League game every Tuesday at 6 p.m. during their season. The June 16 game is the Royals vs. Mets. On June 23, it's the Cardinals vs. the Twins.

On June 14, Learning Unlimited presents a Flag Day Remembrance. The program will begin at 2:00 p.m. at East Side Park in Morris with a veteran's color guard march and flag-raising ceremony. Spend your Sunday afternoon in the park honoring our flag and enjoying the music of the Morris Community Band, under the direction of Adair Horgen and listening to the American Legion Auxiliary Voice of Democracy essay contest winner and other patriotic, inspirational voices.

The Donnelly Rod & Gun Club will hold their annual fishing tournament at Pomme De Terre Lake on June 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The annual meeting will follow. For more information, call 246-3505.

Congratulations to the MAHS track team, which recently completed a very successful season with a fifth place finish in the state track meet. Taylor Nohl, who is a captain of that team, was recently nominated for the H-R Award from the West Central Tribune. He was a member of two relay teams that placed first in most of their meets this year.

Congratulations to Rev. Bob Amundson of Chokio who recently celebrated the 45th anniversary of his ordination. He has been a guest preacher at St. John's and Kongsvinger on many occasions.

Congratulations to Rob Kopel who recently had a hole in one at the Pomme De Terre Golf Course.

Dorothea Giese of Appleton passed away June 2. Her survivors include her niece, former Donnelly area resident Linda (Deleano) Meyer.

Former Donnelly area resident Lorna Brunkow of Herman passed away June 8.

Cletus Raymond of Omaha, Neb. passed away on May 28. Burial will be at St Theresa's Cemetery in Donnelly at a later time. Family members who survive him include his niece, Dorothy (Hilla) Eisele of Donnelly.

There are four more college graduates to recognize:

Angela Halbe, daughter of Steve and Jeannie, and granddaughter of Arlene Gulbranson.

Siblings Tony Wernsing and Anna Dorweiler, children of Dennis and Karlene Wernsing, and grandchildren of Clarence Giese and the late Loraine and Eldon Backen.

Brian Flaten, son of Bruce and Linda Flaten and Joyce and Phil Gausman, grandson of Corrine Flaten.

On June 4, Steve Fults and I traveled to Benson for the Agralite Electric Cooperative's annual meeting. Afterwards several of us had an opportunity for a balloon "ride." The weather did not permit more than a tethered ride.

On June 7, family and friends gathered at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Herman for the 40th wedding aniversary of Deleano and Linda Meyer. They will be spending the next several weeks speaking at churches in Minnesota and Iowa before returning home in late June. In early July, they will be returning to Africa for their final year of service. A complete list of their speaking schedule is in the latest edition of Meyer Mission news. Copies are available in the narthex of Kongsvinger and St. John's. I had a chance to visit with former Donnelly resident Rudy Gulbranson at the celebration. He was planning to return to AK on Monday. After the open house, I visited with Betty Hurlbut at the Pullman House in Herman.

On June 6, Jim and Lou Eystad attended the West Central Word Alone meeting in Starbuck. There will be no meeting in July. The next meeting will be a prayer meeting on August 1 at Indherred Lutheran Church north of Starbuck. There will also be a regional Word Alone gathering at Mt. Carmel on September 25.

After the meeting I traveled to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home to say "hi" to several of the residents there. Later in the day, I visited with Chuck Heinrich at the Sunrise Apartments in Morris. That evening, several of us attended the 60th birthday for Lyle Kruize at the Legion in Morris.

On June 8, Jim and Lou Eystad and I attended the ice cream social at the town hall in Donnelly. While there I had a chance to greet former Donnelly area resident Pearl (Larson) Amundson, who was spending some time visiting friends and family in the area. Thanks to the Threshing Bee royalty for serving up the ice cream and to the Rendsville 4-H for baking and serving all the delicious pies. After the social, it was time for the monthly meeting of the Community Club. Plans are continuing for the Threshing Bee on August 29-30. Anyone with ideas or suggestions is encouraged to contact one of the officers or e-mail them to The next Community Club meeting will be July 13.

Jim and Lou Eystad visited Lloyd Thielke in the hospital this week.

Verle and Della Dunn attended the benefit for Duane Stoneburg in Herman on June 13.
