Gas leak briefly evacuates homes on West 6th Street in Morris

The Morris Fire Department put up barricades and evacuated the block after a gas line was broken on West 6th Street Saturday afternoon.

A small area on the west side of Morris were briefly cordoned off Saturday afternoon after a homeowner digging post holes for a new fence struck a gas line.

The incident occurred on the 600 block of West Sixth Street shortly before 1 p.m. The Morris Police Department, Stevens County Ambulance and Morris Fire Department responded to the call, and quickly cordoned off the area to keep spectators a safe distance away.

Assistant Fire Chief Joe Lembcke also reported that houses on that block were evacuated.

The Fire Department was on the scene for approximately 45 minutes.

Firefights also were called to the University of Minnesota, Morris campus earlier Saturday for a fire in one of the dormitories.

There were no injuries at either call.
