Tigers' season ends in Section 6A semi-final
The 2009 Tiger baseball season came to an end Tuesday when Morris Area fell to defending Section 6A champion Hawley 15-5 in the Section 6A semi-finals.
In the day's other semi-final game, Wheaton/ Herman-Norcross defeated Parkers Prairie 7-6.
Hawley went on to defeat Wheaton/Herman-Norcross 5-2 on Thursday in the section championship game.
The Tigers got off to an excellent start, scoring three in the top of the first. Tyler Hansen ripped a sinking liner to center on the game's first pitch for a double. Then Dustin Sauter singled sharply to center and Hansen scored. Nate Gades lined a base hit to right and Sauter advanced to third. Gades stole second and Sauter scored on the double steal. Ryan Beyer rapped a sharp grounder to third and Gades scored on a throwing error to put the Tigers up 3-0.
Hawley got two back on a walk, single, and triple in the bottom of the first.
Hawley took the lead for good in the second, scoring four runs on an error, four walks, and two hits.
Sauter led off the third with a single and Gades walked. Josh Taylor came in to pinch run for Gades. Darrick Henrichs then rapped an RBI single to right, but Henrichs and Taylor were left stranded on base.
In the fourth, the Nuggets scored two runs on two hits, a walk, and two Tiger errors to go up 8-4.
The Tigers threatened to close in during the top of the fifth, but could not come up with the clutch hit. With Beyer on second, Tanner Berning hit a high pop which was misplayed at first allowing Beyer to score. Mitch Carbert singled and it looked like Morris might rally, but the third out was recorded to end the Tigers' half of the inning.
Hawley hit the ball for seven runs on seven hits and the game ended in five innings.
"Hawley is the defending champs and they played well," said coach Lyle Rambow. "We were frustrated by a few misplays that gave Hawley some extra chances."
