Talking It Over -- A long, cold winter has passed

After a long, cold and snowy winter you can almost hear a collective sigh of relief when the month of May finally arrives. You know once the calendar turns to May that warmer, dryer times are ahead.

I took a few minutes to google 'May' and learned some interesting facts. One item stated that the month may have been named for a Greek Goddess 'Maia' who was the goddess of fertility. That was quite interesting since people often think of spring-time as a season for love and romance. Putting all 'hormonal' feelings aside, there are many other 'love' related events that take place during May.

One of the first of these was practiced often when I was younger but not seen much today. On May first we had a pleasant and fun activity where we made and delivered May baskets to the people we cared about. After making the delivery, you had to run quickly (or maybe walk slowly, depending on who it was) in order to avoid the customary kiss that was to follow. We had a lot of fun with it in school even though the 'kiss' part was often left out.

Following soon after May Day is usually Mother's Day. This is a great day to honor mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and friends who fill a 'motherly' role in our lives. As a mother, I enjoy the day when hopefully I can be treated to a good meal, be surrounded by my children and grandchildren and just not have to do anything all day.

Some of my favorite things also begin in May. I love to plant my garden, working with the dirt and tiny plants, watching them grow and mature. I also like the hustle and bustle of activities that take place at the school. The excitement on the faces of the children as the proudly display what they have learned during the year and are rewarded for their efforts. There's anticipation and pride felt by the senior class members and their parents as they complete their final days of school. But most of all, the hard work, pride and talent that shows through each little program or project.

By the end of the month, a lot will have been accomplished. Our fields and gardens will be freshly planted. The trees and lawns will be green with new life. There will be flowers blooming, glistening lakes and rivers and beautiful summer skies, sunrises and sunsets. The days are warmer and perfect for enjoying the outdoors in a relatively bug-free atmosphere.

I love May. I wait anxiously for its arrival each year and try to enjoy each day to the fullest, no matter how busy I get. I know that with the completion of each new day in May, summer is just that much closer.
